PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

COLLECTIVE LIVING SPACE is defined as three or more unrelated people who comes from different cultures, religions or countries choose to live together and it may occur some problems.

  • CONFLICT is always arise in human relationships. Having a process for how to deal with inevitable conflict that comes up is very important. We recommend a more formal procedure, as well as using shared values to figure out how to address conflict. For example, having an agreement that if there is conflict between 2 people they will address it directly. The other solution can be communicationCommunity as "a body of people living in one place, district, or country" and the way that people interact to each other. It exists anywhere people live together. It is the quality of community that differs from region to region, and different types of communities offer different levels of support or conditions for human fulfilment.

  • HYGIENE is also one of the problems that we have to focus on. For instance, one of the housemates do not care for his personal hygiene and it will result in bad condition of living environment. This will not only affect himself but also his housemates. In order to solve the problem, improvement on personal hygienic habit must be enhanced, such as keep the unit clean, allocating task for doing chores and setting up rules.

  • NOISE is defined as unwanted, unpleasant, disagreeable sound that causes discomfort. It may occur and is unavoidable when many people gather in one place. Loudly played radio or music systems, and other electronic gadgets in the living room may not be a problem if one is living alone in one's own home but it could be a concern in a collective living space if others want to have quiet time there. There're some solutions which can be controlled such as set up the rules to control the volume and contract to abide by "house rules" for everyone's benefit, reduce noise at the source by using different types of absorptive material can be used to control interior noise.

EMPATHIZING

Our group's topic is
-- COLLECTIVE LIVING SPACE --

On the first day, lectures divided us into few groups and asked every group to choose a topic which is for exploring, brainstorming and discussing the solutions of setting up problems and write down as a proposal. Well, our group decided to choose this topic as three of us are living in a cooperative so we can directly experience of it. Also, we thought that it was quite related to interior design and three of us are major in INTERIOR DESIGN.

As we know that, COMMUNICATION is the essential issue in any discussion. However, our group was facing on this problem - COMMUNICATION as our group members' English are not well including me. In order to make our discussion as efficiency as possible, we have tried to present our views as far as we can and will begin with a rather carefully structured set of ground rules. Following these rules may be a bit difficult at first, but we believe that later in this course if we choose, we can modify them.

Collective living brings 3 main BENEFITS as:

 - Financial
   > Save money through sharing rooms and resources
   > Taxes are a shared expense not billed individually

 - Social
   > Cooperative living build communities where people know and assist each other
   > Reduce vandalism and anti social behaviour

 - Personal
   > Reduce dependency and give people a stake in where they live
